About Malta Digital Nomad Visa

The Malta Digital Nomad Visa is available to foreigners who work remotely and receive a stable income from outside Malta. The visa allows holders to live, travel and enjoy time on the islands of Malta and, at the same time, to work from anywhere where there is the Internet. To be eligible for the Malta Digital Nomad Visa, an applicant must fulfil five main requirements:

  1. Not be a citizen of the EU, the EEA, Switzerland, or some other countries.
  2. Have a monthly income of at least €2,700.
  3. Work for an employer registered outside Malta

or be a partner or a shareholder in a company registered in a foreign country.

  • Work by using telecommunications technology.
  • Have a place to stay in Malta: it may be a rented

or owned property, a room in a hotel or a private house if an applicant plans to stay with friends or relatives in Malta. The applicant can move to Malta with their family members: a spouse, minor children and children dependent on the main applicant financially or due to an illness or disability.

The Maltese archipelago is located in the Mediterranean Sea and consists of three inhabited and several uninhabited small islands. A warm climate, picturesque beaches and leisure lifestyle are some of the reasons why digital nomads choose Malta for relocation.

English and Maltese are the primary languages in Malta. There are many language schools where native speakers work. Also, there are different programs and language camping for children in Malta.

Tax exemption

With Digital Nomad Visas, foreigners do not need to pay taxes in Malta if they don’t have any income obtained from Malta. Additionally, if the visa holders have tax residency in their home country, they do not need to pay taxes in Malta even if they live there for longer than 183 days per year.

How long can Digital Nomad Visa holders live in Malta?

The initial visa is issued for one year. It may be renewed twice for a maximum total stay of three years at the discretion of the Residency Malta Agency, subject to the applicant still being to satisfy the programme criteria.

If you do not apply or qualify for a renewal, you can submit a new application 12 months after the expiry of the preceding residence permit. In all cases, the total term one can be in possession of a Nomad Residence Permit must never exceed three years.

To be eligible for renewal, Nomad Residence Permit holders must prove that they have resided in Malta for a cumulative of at least five months over the previous 12 months and still satisfy the respective economic activity criteria

Applicants` expenses

The Malta Digital Nomad Visa applicants pay an administrative fee, buy health insurance and are charged for the issue of a residence permit card.

Accommodation expenses depend on the place where an applicant is going to live. If the applicant rents a property, monthly expenses shall be approximately €1,000.

Preliminary check

We conduct a detailed Due Diligence check on our clients before submitting their applications to the relevant government department.
Our Anti Money-Laundering Compliance Officer examines the applicant’s documents and assesses the potential risks. If they find issues that we believe may result in the application being rejected, we ask the client to attach additional documents or choose alternative programs.
This process reduces the risk of rejection to 1%.

Collecting documents

Immigrant Invest’s lawyers compile a list of documents needed for the application. The investor provides us with the originals of these documents. Our lawyers can assist in document translations and copy certification.
The total time of document preparation depends on what documents the applicant has and which family members will accompany them.

Submit the application and approval

The ready-made package of documents is sent
to the Residency Malta Agency. The Agency reviews the documents submitted on behalf of the main applicant and their family.
During the Due Diligence process, the Agency may request additional information, which our lawyers address. After consultation with the applicant, they prepare an official answer.
After completing the verification of the documents, the Agency sends a notice with application approval.

The main applicant and their relatives included in the application travel to Malta to submit their biometric data and get residence permit cards. They have two months to do it
